Pathognomonic.One of medicine's most misunderstood words. Sometimes when authors write, "pathognomonic," what they really mean is "characteristic" or "hallmark."But not us, not here.

Here, a pathognomonic finding is a finding that has 100% specificity for a disease. It is a finding that should appear nowhere else except for that disease. It is exclusive to its disease.

The rest of the exam doesn't matter.

The history doesn't matter.

What's in the chart doesn't matter.

If you find the sign, you find the disease, period.
